Last night, Variety broke the news that Drafthouse Films, Timpson Films and Magnet Releasing are planning to produce a 26-chapter anthology horror film called "The ABCs of Death." They will recruit 25 established horror directors, and the 26th chapter will be directed by a contest winner. Each director is assigned a letter of the alphabet that represents a word which each filmmaker will interpet into a short story about death.
Is this a coolest idea ever or what?! Horror anthologies are few and far-between these days, or sorely missed. Yes, Trick r' Treat was nice, but I want MORE! Enough hoity-toity flicks about Paris or Tokyo - bring on the brutality! Here is a freaking awesome teaser poster for the film:
And here is the list of established directors involved so far:
Banjong Pisanthanakun (Shutter)
Angela Bettis (Roman)
Adrian Garcia Bogliano (Cold Sweat)
Jason Eisener (Hobo With A Shotgun)
Ernesto Diaz Espinoza (Mirageman)
Bruno Forzani and Héléne Cattet (Amer)
Gadi Harel (DeadGirl)
Thomas Malling (Norwegian Ninja)
Yoshihiro Nishimura (Tokyo Gore Police)
Simon Rumley (Red, White and Blue)
Tak Sakaguchi and Yuji Shimomura (Yakuza Weapon) Marcel Sarmiento (DeadGirl)
Srdjan Spasojevic (A Serbian Film)
Timo Tjahjanto (Macabre)
Andrew Traucki (Black Water)
Nacho Vigalando (Time Crimes)
Jake West (Evil Aliens)
Ti West (The House of the Devil)
Ben Wheatley (Kill List)
Adam Wingard (A Horrible Way To Die)
What a collection of filmmakers! Though that list does not seem to be complete, unless somebody is doing more than one film. Even if the collaborators split up, that's still only 22 filmmakers there. Regardless, I am very excited. What do you think?
