By now, we've all seen the teaser trailer for Don't Be Afraid of the Dark. You know, the one that opens with "You're sitting there in the dark..." and ends with a predictable jump-scare. While that first look did not particularly impress, the fact that Guillermo del Toro is co-writing/producing and Guy Pearce co-stars are good signs.
Plus, the film is rated R! I am dumbfounded and absolutely thrilled about that. Given the cast and subject matter, I fully expected this film to be PG-13 at the highest. The R rating suggests there will be no punches pulled here and chances are newcomer Troy Nixey will have lots of creative control!
Pearce and Katie Holmes (I know, ugh, but hopefully Guy's awesomeness will balance out her awfulness) star as a couple, Alex and Kim, who move into a spooky old house with Alex's daughter, Sally. The little girl is soon plagued by creepy whispering creatures who want to "play" with her. If this all sounds familiar, you may be thinking of the 1973 cult television movie of the same name.
